colorectal rates high among youth      Jun 12 2009 3:40AM

Colon or colorectal cancer rates on a rise. Why?

The occurrence of colorectal cancer has increased dramatically lately. Blame who? Not one, but there are several culprits. Studies show that increasing westernization can be a likely cause for the rising occurrence of colon cancer. How? Let me show you.

Researches show that the cancer shows up mainly in young adults i.e. those who are below 45. The global impact of westernization paves way to junk food consumption. Who can resist a cheese dripping ham burger at KFCs or a footlong burger filled with sumptuous chicken and cheese at Subway?

But at the same time it becomes difficult for your body to resist colon cancer. Eating junk, driving instead of walking, smoking, alcoholism, high intake of red or processed meat, inadequate consumption of fruits, physical inactivity etc are all causes of colorectal cancer among the youth.

Staying alert can still pull you out of this disease. If detected early, colon cancer is curable. Unfortunately, the signs and symptoms of this disease are not prominent.

Here are some of the symptoms, if they occur.

  • Changes in bowel movements- persistent constipation or diarrhea, rectal bleeding, a feeling as if the bowel is not being emptied properly.
  • Dark patches of blood in or on stool; or long, thin, "pencil stools"
  • Abdominal discomfort or bloating
  • Unexplained fatigue, or loss of appetite or weight
