No one is sure that ADHD can be prevented. There are, though, ways to help all children perform their best at home and at school.

Slide 6 :

Can good parental care help in preventing ADHD? Poor prenatal care is associated with ADHD. So if you are expecting, you can increase the chance of your child not having ADHD by staying healthy throughout your pregnancy. A healthy diet and regular doctor visits are important. So is avoiding the use of alcohol and drugs. Children whose mothers smoked while they were pregnant have twice the risk of developing ADHD. Some studies suggest a pregnant woman's exposure to lead as well as that of a young child may be linked to ADHD.

Does diet play a role in preventing ADHD? Giving your child a healthy, balanced diet from an early age will instill good eating habits. A balanced diet, being physically active, and getting exercise can help all children, even those who are already diagnosed with ADHD.

There is no scientific proof of a link between ADHD and sugar intake. But some experts believe that altering a child's diet may reduce hyperactive behavior. Ben Feingold developed a popular diet designed to treat hyperactivity. It is an elimination diet that eliminates artificial colorings, flavorings, and preservatives. Many parents who have tried the diet reported an improvement in their child's behavior. Processed sugars and carbohydrates may have an effect on a child's activity level. That's because these compounds produce a rapid increase in blood glucose levels. blood sugar spike may produce an adrenaline rush that could cause a child to become more active.

Parents are encouraged to try eliminating certain foods from their children's diet if they feel the foods affect behavior negatively. Some experts, though, think that behavioral changes may actually be due to the way the families interact with each other while they're on an elimination diet. The child's behavior may improve, not because of the diet, but as a result of getting more attention from the parents. It's important not to be too restrictive with your child's diet. Being too restrictive can result in nutritional deficiencies. Dieticians and doctors can help you devise a healthy eating plan for your children.

Can structured routine help in preventing ADHD? All children can benefit from structured routines and clear expectations. But structured routines and clear expectations are especially helpful for children with ADHD. Posting a daily schedule where your child can see it can help your child know what to expect.

This daily schedule should include specific times for such activities as: waking up eating meals playing doing homework performing household duties watching TV taking part in extracurricular activities going to bed

How does behavior management help in preventing ADHD? Many therapists believe you can control your child's behavior by using behavior management. Some experts think behavior management can be used to prevent ADHD. They also point out it can be used to manage your child's behavior if your child has ADHD. The first step in behavior management is to foster a positive parent-child relationship based on the child's desire to please his or her parents. Therapists say this can be done by spending quality time with your child each day. The time you spend should be designated as your child's "special time".

During this time, let your child pick an activity of his or her own choosing. Then simply focus on enjoying your child and his or her interests. The next step in behavioral management is to use positive reinforcement when your child behaves in appropriate ways. By rewarding positive behavior when it occurs, you can increase the frequency of those behaviors.

Slide 14 :

Will using negative consequences change behavior? The last step in behavioral management is providing negative consequences for undesirable behavior. A child's undesirable behavior should lessen in frequency when it is consistently met with a punishment. Start by explaining the acceptable way of behaving and what the reward is for that behavior. Then explain the negative consequences that your child will face for undesirable behavior. Consistency is important.

But there is agreement that that negative consequences should not be cruel or physically abusive. And they should not be used for revenge.

Slide 16 :

Can behavior therapy also help children with ADHD? For behavior therapy to be effective, children with ADHD should be given frequent reminders of expected behavior and consequences. Children with ADHD also need frequent feedback about their progress. They seem to perform better with short-term goals rather than long-term ones. A constantly changing reward system can help offset boredom with the program.

Slide 17 :

Can parents help prevent ADHD by teaching young children attention-building skills? If you engage you preschooler in activities such as games, blocks, and puzzles, you can teach your child attention skills. Reading to your child is another valuable tool. You can also use nurturing techniques to improve attention. Frequent physical contact and lots of affection are very effective tools.

Slide 18 :

Some research shows that teaching attention skills to children with ADHD can help improve their ability to maintain attention. In one study, children with ADHD and without ADHD were given both visual and auditory attention tasks. The tasks were relatively easy at first. But then they got progressively harder. Many of the tasks involved repetitive, uninteresting tasks that children with ADHD typically perform poorly.

Slide 19 :

The training included repetitive practice in attention tasks; reviewing poor performance and setting new goals; and creating, evaluating, and revising strategies to achieve performance goals. After the program, all participants were given auditory and visual attention tests. The results were compared to the pre-training performances. The pre-training results showed that the children with ADHD performed worse on the attention tests than the children without ADHD.
