What is 5S? A team based activity where everyone works together to improve the conditions in a specific area. Work Place Organization and Productivity Improvement Tool. Also known as the “5 pillars of visual workplace”

Why 5S? A clean and well organized workplace provides a foundation for: a) Good company image bringing more business b) Improving employees’ morale by removing frustration c) Improving Quality d) Eliminating waste e) A safer work place f) Cost reduction g) Better efficiency by reducing machine breakdowns.
Slide 5 :
Sort (The First Pillar) This activity involves systematic sorting out, labeling and removal of all items not needed in the work area so that only the needed items remain. Objective: Clutter reduction by clearly distinguishing between what is needed and to be kept and what is unneeded and to be discarded.
Slide 6 :
Set in Order (The Second Pillar) This activity involves developing a place for everything and labeling it so that it can be found quickly and put away when not in use. Objective: To ensure everything has a place, and there is a place for everything needed.

5S Examples - Sort, Set in Order See the difference? 1. Sort - All unneeded tools, parts and supplies are removed from the area 2. Set in Order - A place for everything and everything is in its place
Slide 8 :
Shine (The Third Pillar) This activity involves cleaning the work place. While cleaning you observe for early signs of troubles on the equipment before these turn into major breakdowns or defects. Objective: A clean work place where by using the senses you detect possible problems before they happen.
Slide 9 :
5S Examples - Shine 3. Shine - The area is cleaned as the work is performed (best) and\or there is a routine to keep the work area clean.
Slide 10 :
Standardize (The Fourth Pillar) This activity involves making a standardized state that exists when the first three pillars are properly maintained. Objective: Make sure that there is a standardized method to do first 3 pillars.
Slide 11 :
Sustain (The Fifth Pillar) This activity involves sustaining the 5S activities on a continuous basis. After a year and more everyone needs to still be doing 5S activities. Objective: Make a commitment to the 5S process for now and the future.
