Slide 1 : Air Pollution-Indicators and control measures Hilir Muhammed.S 2008 MBBS
Slide 2 : Air pollution is the one of the present day health problems throughout the world. The term “Air pollution” signifies the presence of substances in the surrounding atmosphere, generated by the activities of man in concentrations that interfere with human health safety or comfort or injurious to vegetation and animals and other environmental media resulting in chemicals entering the food chain or being present in drinking water and thereby constituting additional source of human exposure.
Slide 3 : Sources of air pollution a) Automobiles-HCs,CO,Pb,Nos,particulate matter etc. b) Industries-Smoke,SO2,NOs,fly ash,HF,Hcl,organic halides,CO,Co2,O3,H2S,SO2 etc. c)Domestic sources-Smoke,dust,SO2,Nos. d)Miscellaneous-Wind borne dust,fungi,moulds,bacteria etc.
Slide 4 : Air pollutants 1)CO 2)SO2 3)Pb 4)HCs 5)CO2 6)Cd 7)H2S 8)O3 9)PAH(Polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons) 10)Particulate matter
Slide 5 : Indicators of Air pollution The best indicators are SO2,smoke and suspended particles. SO2-Major contaminant in many urban and industrial areas. Smoke or soiling index. Grit and dust measurement. Co-efficient of haze. Air pollution index.
Slide 6 : Monitoring of air pollution in INDIA The National Air Quality Monitoring Programme(sponsored by CPCB) facilitates evaluation of long term air quality trends for health related criteria pollutants like SO2,NO2,Pb,H2O,NH3,inhalable dust and PAH.
Slide 7 : Effects of Air Pollution Air pollution can affect by two ways a)Health aspects b)Social and economical aspects a)HEALTH ASPECTS i)Immediate-a/c bronchitis, suffocation ii)Delayed-c/c bronchitis,CA lung,BA,emphysema&respiratory allergies
Slide 8 : b)SOCIAL AND ECONOMICAL ASPECTS (1)Destruction of plant and animal life. (2)Corrotion of metals. (3)Damage to buildings. (4)Cost of cleaning, maintenance and repair. (5)Aesthetic nuisance. (6)Decreased visibility in towns. (7)Damage to clothings etc.
Slide 9 : Prevention and control of Air pollution WHO has recommented the following procedures. (a)Containment. (b)Replacement. (c)Dilution. (d)Legislation. (e)International action.
Slide 10 : a)Containment-prevention of escape of sub.s in to the ambient air. -achieved by enclosure, vntillation and air cleaning. b)Replacement-replacing a process causing air pollution by a new process that does not. eg:-replacing coal with electricity, natural gas etc.
Slide 11 : Contd…. c)Dilution-Achieved by the establishment of “green belts” b/w industrial and residential areas. -some air pollutants are readily removed by vegetation. d)Legislation-Air pollution is controlled in many countries by suitable legislation.eg:-Clean Air Acts. e)International action-To deal with air pollution, WHO has established an international network of laboratories.
Slide 12 : Disinfection of Air -The concept has received much attention in recent years. The methods employed are: 1)Mechanical ventillation-Reduces vitilated air and bacterial density. 2)UV radiation-used in special situations such as opertion theatres, infectious d/s wards etc.
Slide 13 : Contd… 3)Chemical mists-Triethylene glucol vapours are effective air bactericides particularly against droplet nuclei and dust. 4)Dust control-Application of oil to floors in hospitals reduces the bacterial content of Air.
Slide 14 : THANK YOU…!
