The distinguishing feature of autoimmune diseases, which have a prevalence of 3.5% worldwide (1), is the presence of high-affinity autoantibodies in the serum of affected patients. The autoantibodies characteristic of specific autoimmune diseases have always been assayed individually, using conventional immunometric methods (ELISA, RIA, etc.). However, although these methods are regularly improved in terms of diagnostic accuracy, they present some limitations associated with the analysis procedure and performance times, the quantity of reagents required (autoantigens, biological fluids, etc.), and the cost of analysis systems and personnel.
