Inclusion Criteria Acute ischemic stroke in the territory of anterior circulation MRI performed on days 1, 2, and 8 after the onset of symptoms Infarctions clearly enlarged during the first week No thrombolytic or neuroprotective agents were used

Patients 12 patients (6 men, 6 women) Age 71 ± 8 years (mean ± SD) NIH stroke scale on admission 15 ± 6 Mean time from ictus to initial MRI 8.7 ± 2.9 hrs
