Slide 4 :
Why it had to be the fishing net factory? One of the big manufacturing factories in our area Prolonged repetitive grasping or the movements of hyperflexion and hyperextension position of the wrist.
Slide 5 :
Purposes To determine the prevalence of the carpal tunnel syndrome in the fishnet-making factory To identify the possible risk factors associated in this workplace
Slide 6 :
Methods
Slide 7 :
Inclusion criteria Not less than one month of work Age between 15 – 60 years No problem of the C-spine lesion No history of injury to the median nerve No diagnosis for CTS before started the job
Slide 8 :
Criteria for diagnosis Surveillance criteria for CTS using the Delphi technique (1988) To be pain or paresthesia or sensory loss in the median nerve distribution and one of the following: Tinel’s sign or Phalen’s test positive Nocturnal exacerbation of symptoms Motor loss with wasting of APB Abnormal nerve conduction time
Slide 9 :
Population 766 workers 662 workers Prevalence study 240 workers Incidence study 16 weeks period No symptoms & signs Can be followed Inclusion criteria Possible risk factors
Slide 10 :
Results
Slide 11 :
Dermographic data
Slide 12 :
Prevalence study 662 workers Pain 20.85% Numbness 25.38% 14.50% of workers 14.20% of workers Numbness + nocturnal symptoms 38.54% Numbness+ nocturnal symptoms 30.85% Provocative test 20.83% Provocative test 35.11% Nocturnal symptoms & others 35.42% Nocturnal symptoms & others 29.79%
Slide 13 :
Risk factors
Slide 14 :
Conclusion
Slide 15 :
What were the results? Higher rate of the prevalence of CTS than the general population, which was the same as the previous report. The most common symptoms for the diagnostic cases were pain or numbness with the nocturnal exacerbation of symptoms.
Slide 16 :
What could be the risk factors? The workers who worked with the process of making the net had the relative risk higher than the workers who were the office workers or housemaid.
