In telling & retelling personal stories, subjective wellbeing is affected, positively or negatively People need to tell better stories about themselves to recover well & re-invigorate life People need to find useful narrative ‘tools’ (e.g. talking therapies, yoga, medication) to enhance their stories of recovery A better ‘authentic’ story about the self provides people with a helpful foothold on the road to recovery

11 Recovery Language of recovery may not be available: e.g. ‘I had to go to a recovery conference to kind of realise I was in recovery.’ Short and long-term aspects Can be striking short-term, esp. with medication But short-term recovery often gradual/partial/short-lived Longer-term recovery important for many… people are motivated to avoid depression Tortuous journey for some… (e.g. non-responders to medication)

12 4 phases of recovery: Prevent depression in the first place e.g. preventative medication, yoga, counselling Limit impact of actual episodes of depression e.g. notice the pattern of depression-recovery (Even experienced people forget they recover: ‘God I’ve felt this forever, and I will feel like it forever.’) Short and long term recovery important (see below) Re-work the self so it is more functional/ authentic

13 Prevent depression in the first place: Look after the self e.g. therapy, self-help books, fish oils Identify trigger factors e.g. negative thinking Notice warning signs e.g. aversion to music, wanting to isolate the self

14 Longer term recovery Patients & professionals can adopt language of recovery Professionals can be allies in recovery People gain different types of insight People take appropriate responsibilities for recovery Professionals need to recognise patient expertise

15 Longer term recovery & insights: Some feel ‘distorted self’ needs to disintegrate before recovery happens Distorted negative thinking is not the same as the ‘self’ It is possible to ‘re-write’ the depression story more constructively into the self… Effective narrative ‘tools’ go hand-in-hand with telling longer-term recovery stories (e.g. counselling, medication, CAM, hospitalisation, self help, meditation) Recognise life will always be a challenge New ‘self’ beyond depression… An authentically felt self is possible

16 Professional allies in recovery: Patients believe even simple professional approaches can make a big difference Recognising nature of Depression important (e.g. ‘locked in’ feeling, lack of voice) Professionals can convey understanding in small ways (e.g. remaining hopeful but realistic) Promote ‘turning points’ by understanding patient narratives (See Ridge (2009) Recovery from Depression Using the Narrative Approach for more detail)

17 Summing it up: Recovery narrative at any age or stage (Re) invigorating story about the self needed… Patient as experts, profs as allies and ‘guardians’ Patients need to find better stories to tell about the self Medication, therapy, self-help books etc. become ‘tools’ that assist stories of recovering well

18 Summing it up: Professionals can: Help patients by tapping into their narratives Get the story right Assist with turning points e.g. ‘You will recover, but not immediately….’ (Hope is part of the story) Support more ‘useful story’ threads Support patient expertise, as patients must tell the story
