What are STI’s Sexually transmitted infections are mainly transmitted through sexual contact (anal, vaginal and oral) Some STIs are transmitted through blood and other body fluids

You might not be sexually active at this time in your life You may become sexually active in the future and by learning now about STIs you will be better prepared You may also need to support a friend who is sexually active or who has questions about STIs

Symptoms and signs of STI’s Redness, swelling, and/or discharge from the infected area Burning when you urinate (pee) Itching in the genital area Sores, rashes and/or bumps Swollen glands in the groin Pain during intercourse

Symptoms in The Female Any abnormal type of discharge from the vagina. It may be pus-like, yellow or green or smelly. Lower abdominal pain (sometimes accompanied with fever and chills) Vaginal bleeding between periods Vaginal bleeding after intercourse

Symptoms in the Male Any discharge from the penis (watery / milky / thick yellow / green) Pain or swelling in the testicles An itchy feeling inside the penis

What to do??? If you notice any of these symptoms, see you doctor immediately for testing and treatment if required. If medication is prescribed, make sure you take it until it is finished. This way you are sure all bacteria have been eradicated. Even though you cleared up this STI, you may still be able to contract it again.

You cannot tell if someone has an STI by looking at them Sometimes the person doesn’t even know they have an STI and unknowingly spread it to others It is very common for a woman not to know she has an STI because she may have no symptoms or the symptoms may be inside her body

Other STIs have serious consequences, such as sterility, ectopic pregnancy, pelvic inflammatory disease, and cancer , blindness and even death Having an STI increases your risk of acquiring HIV due to the presence of open ulcers or sores which allows viral entry

Some of most common types of STI’s HIV/AIDS Herpes HPV (Genital Warts) Chlamydia Gonorrhea Syphilis Pubic Lice (Crabs)

HIV/AIDS Human immunodeficiency Virus attacks the immune system and finally takes over system. The body cannot fight off infections which attack the body HIV eventually leads to AIDS Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome

HIV/AIDS There is no cure or vaccine for HIV/AIDS When you are first infected with HIV/AIDS you may or may not have acute flu-like symptoms. These go away and you may appear to be healthy for years Even though you do not have any symptoms, you may spread the virus unknowingly to others

Symptoms Severe weight loss * Night sweats Fatigue * Memory loss Fever * Depression Dry cough * Diarrhea Swollen lymph nodes Chronic yeast infection The symptomatic stage usually lasts for a number of years

From HIV to AIDS Aids is diagnosed when your CD 4 blood count is at 200 or lower and you have an opportunistic infection (i.e. Kaposi’s Sarcoma or PCP (This is a set point for medical diagnosis) A healthy blood count may range from 800 to 1200 CD4

Herpes Two types of herpes: Simplex 1 & Simplex 2 Simplex 1 is cold sores on the mouth Simplex 2 is sores in the genital area Herpes is usually spread by sexual contact but can be transmitted when any body surface comes in contact with a herpes sore and transfers the virus

Herpes There is no cure for herpes but there is medication which will help ease the pain and future flare ups of the virus You can pass the virus on even if there are no visible sores present

Human Papillomavirus - HPV(Genital Warts) These are cluster types warts in the genital area. There may be one or several warts present Freezing or laser treatment may be used for removal of warts Recently, there is a new vaccine being offered to females age 9-26 to guard against infection HPV may lead to cervical cancer, sterility DON’T TRY TO TREAT GENITAL WARTS YOURSELF

Chlamydia One of the most common STI’s amongst the youth Both female and male may get Chlamydia Chlamydia may be cured with antibiotics, but both partners should be treated to ensure they won’t re-infect each other This STI may cause pelvic inflammatory disease which increases the risk infertility in females or tubal (ectopic) pregnancy if untreated Sometimes a woman may never know she is infected until she has a test for it Chlamydia may cause sterility in males if untreated

Syphilis Syphilis may be treated and cured with antibiotics There are four stages of syphilis primary – secondary – latent – tertiary Untreated syphilis can cause blindness, heart damage/failure, brain and spinal cord damage, mental disorders and death Damage done to the body is irreversible

Pubic Lice commonly known as “CRABS” These are spread by sexual contact Can be treated with special creams, lotions or shampoos which will kill the lice You can also get lice from bed sheets or towels of an infected person Cannot be picked up from toilets seats

An itch in the pubic area Light brown insects the size of a pinhead may be seen Oval, whitish eggs may be seen on the hair close to the skin SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
